1955 in SPORT
A Year Like None Other
A Year Like None Other
Edited by Dave Anderson
It is widely remembered as the year the Brooklyn Dodgers finally won the World Series, but 1955 was so much more than that. It was a fascinating year in sports: a year the world was introduced to Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell and Arnold Palmer; a year Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle established their Hall of Fame credentials; a year old pros Rocky Marciano and Otto Graham ended splendid careers as champions; a year Rocket Richard lost an NHL scoring title and sparked a riot; and a year Pancho Gonzales, the world's top tennis player, couldn't find a match.
Fifty years later, 1955 in Sport celebrates that remarkable year in an anthology of the finest writing and photographs from that era that originally appeared in SPORT magazine. In addition to the athletes mentioned above, the book focuses on the champion Dodgers. Each SPORT essay will have a preface and an epilogue to give the article historical context.
